We installed a stainless steel six-meter tall prickly pear, from which living cacti sprout, creating tension between what is artificial and what is natural

For the campus of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Mariscal designed a sculpture that looks like a six-meter tall prickly pear, made of stainless steel with a polished mirror finish, from which living cacti sprout. The idea is to propose an ironic reflection of our own reality, playing with the contrast between what is artificial and what is natural. The stainless steel surface, which is totally plain and perfect in contrast to the prickly, rough appearance of the cactus, has small living cacti sprouting out from it, which fight to take over this icon which has come to substitute them.
